The Republic of Korea (ROK) and the U.S. fired surface-to-surface missiles off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula on October 5 in response to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) firing a missile over Japan on Tuesday. It was the first time in five years that the DPRK fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan, prompting Tokyo to issue evacuation warnings for some residents. ROK and U.S. warplanes also conducted bombing drills on Tuesday afternoon.
