A former policeman killed at least 38 people, including 24 children, in a gun and knife attack at a daycare center in Nong Bua Lamphu Province in northeastern Thailand on Thursday, later shooting dead his wife and child at their home before turning his weapon on himself, police said.

Police identified the attacker as a former member of the force who was dismissed from his post last year over drug allegations.

He was facing trial on a drugs charge and had been in court in the hours before the shooting, police said, adding he was due to face a verdict on Friday.

The national police chief said the gun used in the shooting was a 9mm legally-owned pistol.

Another 12 people were injured in the attack, including eight critically injured.

District police official Chakkraphat Wichitvaidya cited witnesses as saying the gunman was also seen wielding a knife in the attack in the town of Uthai Sawan, 500 kilometers northeast of capital Bangkok.

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will visit the location of attack on Friday, according to his spokesperson.

Earlier, the prime minister ordered local police commanders to fast-track their investigation into the attack and sent his condolences to the families of victims.

The motive of the attack is yet unknown.
