The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Sunday said Taiwan will enjoy a high degree of autonomy as a special administrative region after reunification, in its second response to Tesla CEO Elon Musk's remarks about China's Taiwan region.

The billionaire said he recommended "a special administrative zone for Taiwan" in an interview with the Financial Times published on Friday.

"Provided that China's sovereignty, security and development interests are guaranteed, after reunification Taiwan will enjoy a high degree of autonomy as a special administrative region," Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told reporters at a regular press briefing in Beijing.

Taiwan's social system and its way of life will be fully respected, and the private property, religious beliefs, and lawful rights and interests of the people in Taiwan will be fully protected, Mao added.

The spokesperson said the reunification of China will not harm the legitimate interests of any other country, including any economic interests they might have in Taiwan.

On the contrary, it will bring more development opportunities to all countries, and create more positive momentum for prosperity and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the rest of the world, she added.

"We hope and are happy to see more and more people understand and support peaceful reunification and 'One Country, Two Systems,'" said Mao.

In her first response to Musk's remarks on Saturday, the spokesperson said China's position on the Taiwan question is consistent and clear-cut.

In the interview, Musk also warned about the consequences of a conflict over Taiwan.

Chinese Ambassador to the United States Qin Gang expressed his appreciation of Musk in a Twitter post on Sunday.

"I would like to thank @elonmusk for his call for peace across the Taiwan Straits and his idea about establishing a special administrative zone for Taiwan," Qin wrote.

"Actually, peaceful reunification and 'One Country, Two Systems' are our basic principles for resolving the Taiwan question and the best approach to realizing national reunification," he added.
