Erling Haaland scored his 20th goal of his first season with Manchester City, also his 15th in the Premier League, on Saturday, sending City top of the league with a 4-0 victory over Southampton.
Haaland himself is en route to challenge league records of 34 goals shared by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole during the 42-game campaign, and 32 by Mohamed Salah in the 38-game era.
The Norwegian added a fourth goal for City in the 65th minute after first-half strikes from Joao Cancelo and Phil Foden plus a volley after the interval from Riyad Mahrez.
City now sit at the top of the standings on 23 points from nine matches although Arsenal, on 21, can reclaim the lead if they beat Liverpool at home on Sunday.
Southampton, meanwhile, were left 16th on seven points after falling to their fourth consecutive league defeat.
Elsewhere in Europe, AC Milan beat Juventus 2-0 with goals from defender Fikayo Tomori and midfielder Brahim Diaz in Italy's Serie A.
Borussia Dortmund forced a 2-2 tie with leaders Bayern Munich thanks to a late header from Anthony Modeste in Germany's Bundesliga.
Ligue 1 leaders Paris St Germain played more than one half with 10 men and had to settle for a goalless draw at Stade de Reims in France.
Real Madrid went top of Spain's La Liga with an early goal from Eder Militao in a 1-0 win over Getafe.
