Russia is ready to participate in addressing global food problems and help the poorest developing countries, as the country expects a record harvest this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday in a video address.

In a congratulatory speech marking the country's Agriculture and Processing Industry Workers' Day, Putin said agriculture, as a key sector of Russian economy, shows "convincing, strong results," and "this year we expect a record harvest of grain - about 150 million tonnes, including some 100 million tonnes of wheat."

These figures seemed difficult to reach only recently, he added. And as the country fully meets domestic demand for essential products and ensures food security, Russia is building up export potential and will assist the poorest countries in particular.

"I'd like to emphasize this - we are ready to make our contribution to overcoming global food challenges and provide the necessary assistance to the poorest, developing nations," said Putin.

Putin admitted that work under "unprecedented" Western sanctions pressure poses new challenges, but said that all issues in the agriculture sector will be addressed with the support of the state.

He also stressed efforts in upgrading technological sovereignty in agriculture, as well as improving the living standards in Russia's rural areas.

An official professional holiday in Russia that started in 1999, the Agriculture and Processing Industry Workers' Day has been celebrated annually on the second Sunday of October.
