China's first bridge over the Yangtze River opened on October 15, 1957. Construction began on September 1, 1955, as a key project of China's first Five-Year Plan. It was also China's first bridge that served as both a road and a railway. The bridge marked the beginning of the construction of modern bridges in China. Now, there are more than 100 bridges over the main stream of the Yangtze River.
