U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday promised to continue providing Ukraine with "the support needed to defend itself, including advanced air defense systems," according to a White House statement.

Biden made the pledge in a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"Air defense is currently the number one priority in our defense cooperation," Zelenskyy said. "We also need U.S. leadership with the G7's tough stance and with support for our UN GA resolution."

Russia launched a large-scale attack against Ukrainian targets on Monday in retaliation for a deadly blast on the Crimean Bridge, President Vladimir Putin announced. He said air, sea and land-based high-precision long-range weapons were massively fired against Ukraine's energy, military command and communications facilities.

Ukraine reported 14 civilian casualties and 97 injuries after Russia's missile attack. The Ukrainian energy ministry said it will halt exports of electricity to the European Union following the missile strikes on energy infrastructure.
