UK Home Office announced Monday that it will ban 1,300 football fans from England and Wales from traveling to Qatar to attend the upcoming FIFA World Cup that will take place from November 20 to December 18.

"We will not let the behavior of a minority of lawbreakers tarnish what will be an exciting tournament," Home Secretary Suella Braverman. "Violence, abuse and disorder is not tolerated here, and this criminal behavior will not be tolerated at the World Cup, which is why we are taking this firm approach."

The banning order targets supporters with a history of football-related violence and will take effect on Friday.

Invasions in fields and crowd trouble increased dramatically last season in football events in England. The Premier League came up with stricter safety measures against misbehaviors right before the 2022-23 season began. Fans who broke rules could face six months in prison as well as an unlimited fine.

English football hooligans have been known as the world's most notorious group. On May 29, 1985, some fans of Liverpool broke through a line of police officers and ran towards opposing supporters of Juventus during the European Cup Final at Heysel Stadium in Brussels. 39 people, mostly Italian and Juventus fans, died as a result. It is known as the infamous and tragic Heysel Stadium disaster.

On July 11, 2021, when the UEFA European Championship final was happening between England and Italy at Wembley Stadium in London, England, riots broke out at the entrance to Wembley Stadium, and in Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square. In the end, 69 people were arrested by the police.

England are in Group B with Iran, USA and Wales at the World Cup in Qatar. They will play against Iran in their first game at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha on November 21.
