A group of 11 Chinese experts arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday to assist the country in its disaster assessment and flood prevention and mitigation work, according to a CMG reporter.

Organized by China's Ministry of Emergency Management, the team also comprises personnel from the Ministry of Water Resources and China Meteorological Administration.

Since June, Pakistan has been hit by severe floods and millions of people have been displaced.

Pakistan is still at a critical juncture in its flood control and disaster relief work, Zhou Xuewen, vice minister of China's Emergency Management, said at a farewell ceremony held for the team in Beijing on Tuesday.

The deployment of the team demonstrates China's commitment to stand with Pakistan, the vice minister added.

On behalf of the Pakistani government and people, Pakistani Ambassador to China Moin ul Haque expressed gratitude at the ceremony for the support offered by the Chinese government and people, adding he looks forward to seeing the two countries further deepen cooperation on disaster management, especially in early warning system and capacity building for disaster control.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Thursday that the Pakistani government has spent almost 100 billion rupees ($450 million) for the relief and assistance of the flood-affected people, as relief and rehabilitation activities continue in affected areas.

Blankets, tents, food packages and other items are being provided to the flood victims, he said.

China has provided great support for Pakistan after catastrophic floods played havoc across the country, Sharif said, and not only the Chinese government but the Chinese people and companies have extended support to flood victims of Pakistan.

The death toll from this season's monsoon rains and floods since mid-June has risen to 1,700 along with 12,867 injured in Pakistan, the National Disaster Management Authority said on Thursday night.
