Pacific saury is a fixture of Japan's autumn cuisine. People in Tokyo celebrated their first Pacific Saury Festival in three years on October 9, handing out 1,000 free fish to the public. Historically, organizers would prepare about 5,000 saury for the festival, but this year the number was slashed by 80 percent due to a decline in the catch, which was at a three-year low. According to the Fisheries Agency, this year's North Pacific catch is only about a third of its peak.
