James Brennand, a former Texas police officer, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault by a public servant in connection with the shooting of 17-year-old Erik Cantu, officials said on Tuesday.
Brennand was terminated by the San Antonio Police Department on October 4 after the shooting on October 2.
Cantu was sitting with a female friend in the parking lot of a North Side McDonald's when he was shot by Brennand. Police said the incident started after the officer spotted a suspect he believed had been involved in a disturbance the night before.
Cantu's family said he is in critical condition and on life support. Further charges could be brought against Brennand if Cantu doesn't survive.
