China's ruling party on Wednesday concluded its four-day plenum, discussing key issues and the achievements of the Communist Party of China (CPC) over the past five years.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, gave an important speech and delivered a work report on behalf of the Central Committee's Political Bureau.

The session is believed to have paved the way for the 20th CPC National Congress, which will be held on Sunday.

"It is of great significance as a prelude to the success of the 20th CPC National Congress," said Li Yong, a current affairs commentator and senior fellow of the China Association of International Trade.

Li told CGTN that it is a demonstration of China's whole-process people's democracy, as the session participants are elected by the people and represent the people's concerns and interests. He said the session is a consensus-building process and that the representatives have reached consensus on key goals and targets, which will be eventually reviewed and possibly revised.

The session also issued a communique outlining the Party's challenges, goals and proposals.

Li said the communique confirms the achievements being made under the leadership of the CPC, particularly in the last decade, and the correct path to socialist development. He said we can reasonably expect consistency in the policies being adopted for future development, particularly in economic reform and opening-up, "which is critical for China's future economic development integration with the global economy."

Li believes the communique also exudes confidence in the Party's ability to do what needs to be done regardless of the challenges.

With the 20th CPC National Congress just around the corner, all eyes are on one of the world's largest political parties and second-largest economy.
