China defeated Mexico 2-1 in their first Group C match at the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) U-17 Women's World Cup in Mumbai, India on Wednesday.

Mexico were awarded a penalty in the 35th minute when China defender Huang Jiaxin handled the ball inside the box, but Maribel Flores' shot hit the crossbar.

China broke the deadlock in the opening minutes of the second half. Huang was knocked over in the box, giving China captain Qiao Ruiqi the chance to step up and convert the subsequent penalty.

Substitute Yu Xingyue doubled the lead for the young Steel Roses in the 90th minute after skipping through the defense in a counterattack and tapping the ball home.

Two minutes into stoppage time, Katherin Guijarro pulled one back for Mexico, who almost leveled in the last minute, but a volley from Valerie Vargas was saved by China keeper Liu Chen.

In Group C's next matchday, China will face Colombia, while Mexico take on Spain on Saturday.

A total of 16 teams compete during the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, which take place from October 11 to 30 in three cities in India. Morocco and Tanzania, along with hosts India, make their debut. Spain, which won their first title in 2018, are the defending champions.
