"Looking up, I see the immensity of the cosmos; bowing my head, I look at the multitude of the world. The gaze flies, the heart expands, the joy of the senses can reach its peak, and indeed, this is true happiness." This is what the European Space Agency's astronaut Samantha Cristo-foretti posted on social media when she was flying over China on the International Space Station on Wednesday. It's a quotation from Lanting Xu, also known as the "Orchid Pavilion Preface." It is generally considered the best-known work in Chinese calligraphy history. It was written nearly 1,700 years ago by noted calligrapher Wang Xizhi during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317–420). Forty-five-year-old Cristo-foretti is Italy's first female astronaut. She participated in the first China-Europe joint space training in China's Yantai City in 2017.
