Peaceful reunification and "One Country, Two Systems" make up China's fundamental policy over the Taiwan question, said Sun Yeli, spokesperson for the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at a press conference on Saturday.
"Peaceful reunification is in the best interest of the Chinese nation, including Taiwan compatriots, in the best interest of China's long-term, steady development, and is our first choice for the solution to the Taiwan question," Sun said. "We are willing to continue to make the sincerest and the greatest efforts for peaceful reunification and creating vast space for peaceful reunification."
Sun stressed that the white paper titled "The Taiwan Question and China's Reunification in the New Era" published in August reaffirms China's fundamental policy over the Taiwan question.
"We make no promise to renounce the use of force and reserve the option of taking all necessary means. We are not targeting our Taiwan compatriots, but external intervention, 'Taiwan independence' forces and their separatist activities," Sun said. "Our goal is to safeguard the prospect of peaceful reunification of the country at the fundamental level and to promote the process of peaceful reunification. As long as there is one line of possibility for peaceful reunification, we will make a hundred times more efforts to realize it. Unpeaceful means will be our last resort."
"Currently, the 'Taiwan independence' forces have been provoking constantly in separatist activities while the external forces try to use the Taiwan question against China. Their acts are damaging badly the fundamental interest of the Chinese nation as well as Taiwan compatriots, jeopardize the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and may sabotage the prospect of peaceful reunification," Sun said.
"If the acts of the 'Taiwan independence' forces and the external forces continue to grow, they will pull Taiwan to the abyss of calamity and hurt our compatriots deeply. Nobody and no force should underestimate our determination, will and ability to safeguard our sovereignty and territorial integrity. I hope Taiwan compatriots understand the following facts: reunification is beneficial; 'Taiwan independence' goes nowhere; the external forces cannot be trusted. Compatriots from both sides of the Taiwan Straits should join hands to firmly oppose 'Taiwan independence' and external intervention and work together for the bright future of peaceful reunification," Sun added.
