Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday sent a congratulatory message to Abdul Latif Rashid on his election as Iraq's new president.

Xi said China is willing to work with President Rashid to promote new progress in the China-Iraq strategic partnership for the benefit of the two countries and peoples.

Iraq's lawmakers on Thursday elected Rashid as the new president, marking a crucial step toward forming a new government for the country.
