World Poverty Day, formally known as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, is held annually on October 17. It is an international day to raise awareness about the need to end global poverty in all its forms everywhere.
Decades of an anti-poverty campaign by the Chinese government have lifted more people nationwide out of poverty than any other country and helped hundreds of millions stand on their feet amid an infrastructure boom, industrialization push and generous subsidies. Butuo, however, was an exception. Progress has been slow and poverty stubborn and persistent.
For decades, Butuo County in the hinterland of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Sichuan Province, was the poster child for extreme poverty in the country. Adversities were manifold: geographical remoteness, marginalization, and a double epidemic of drugs and HIV. Economic and social development was also late to arrive in the area. China's decades-long anti-poverty campaign has made notable achievements nationwide. And while progress in Butuo has been palpable, it's been slow and difficult.
