China's National Meteorological Center issued a yellow alert for Nesat, the 20th typhoon of this year, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. As of 9 a.m., the typhoon was located in the northwestern part of the South China Sea, about 210 kilometers northeast of Sansha City, south China's Hainan Province.
Nesat is expected to move west by south at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour and gradually weaken as it approaches the southern coast of Hainan. It will then turn west and weaken rapidly, sweeping through the waters south of Hainan on Wednesday before dissipating south of Beibu Gulf on Thursday morning.
Gale forecast: From 2 p.m. on Tuesday to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, there will be Force 7 to 9 winds in the East China Sea, the Taiwan Straits, the Pacific Ocean east of Taiwan, the Bashi Channel, parts of the South China Sea, the waters near the Xisha Islands, Beibu Gulf, the Qiongzhou Strait, and the coasts of Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan. There will be Force 10 to 11 gales with gusts up to 12 or 13 on the southeastern coast of Hainan, the Taiwan Straits and parts of the South China Sea. The wind speed near Nesat's eye could reach Force 12 to 14, with gusts up to 15 or 16.
Precipitation forecast: From 2 p.m. on Tuesday to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, there will be heavy rain in parts of Hainan and the southern Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong. Southeast Hainan could experience torrential rains.
