No matter how the international situation changes, China is committed to defending true multilateralism, continuing to improve global governance and promoting global cooperation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday at a regular press briefing.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), China has always stood on the side of unity and cooperation, joined in improving the global governance system through reform and made efforts in building a new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, justice and fairness, Wang said. 

Noting that China is a staunch defender of the current international order, Wang said China will firmly uphold the international system with the United Nations (UN) at its core, an international order based on international law and a multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core.

He said over the past decade, China has become the second largest contributor to the UN and peacekeeping, fulfilled the "WTO accession" commitments, significantly relaxed market access and reduced the overall level of import tariffs from 15.3 percent to 7.4 percent.

Wang said China has achieved the UN Millennium Development Goals and contributed an average of 38.6 percent to world economic growth for the past decade or so, adding that the country is also the largest contributor of peacekeeping troops among the permanent members of the UN Security Council.

China has also actively participated in mediating "hotspot issues," such as the Korean Peninsula, the Iranian nuclear issue and Afghanistan, and promoted political settlement, he added.

As a responsible major country that promotes the reform and improvement of the global governance system, China has advocated "the concept of global governance based on the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits," promoted the transformation of the G20 into a long-term governance mechanism, initiated the establishment of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the New Development Bank, and committed to deepening Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) cooperation, Wang said.
