The 2021-2022 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) epidemic season was the largest ever observed in Europe, according to a report released by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

The report shows that 2,467 outbreaks in poultry led to nearly 48 million birds being culled at the affected establishments. In addition, 187 cases were detected in captive birds, along with 3,573 HPAI events in wild birds. The epidemic affected 37 European countries.

The report also points out that the outbreak has affected the supplies of chicken and eggs in many European countries, further pushing up their prices.
