Qatar inaugurates solar plant to boost World Cup power
00:51

Natural gas-rich Qatar inaugurated its first solar power plant on October 18 at a vast site stretching through the desert. It is expected to provide up to 10 percent of the tiny Gulf nation's energy supply. The project was launched in 2016 in partnership with France's TotalEnergies and Japan's Marubeni as part of a broader push by Qatar – one of the world's biggest producers of liquefied natural gas – to invest in solar energy. At a cost of 1.7 billion Qatari riyals ($467 million), it consists of 1.8 million solar panels and covers more than 10 square kilometers.
