China has carried out a series of fundamental, pioneering and long-term work in the building of ecological civilization and made significant progress in building a beautiful China, Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment Zhai Qing told a press conference on Friday.

The CPC regards the building of ecological civilization as a fundamental plan for the perpetual development of the Chinese nation, Zhai noted on the sidelines of the ongoing 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

While highlighting that China has incorporated achieving carbon peak emissions and carbon neutrality into its overall economic and social development, he said China's CO2 emissions per unit of GDP dipped 34.4 percent and the share of coal use in total energy consumption declined to 56 percent in 2021.

Over the past ten years, historical, transitional and overall changes have occurred in the building of ecological civilization, and ecological and environmental protection, noted Zhai.

China has become the fastest country to improve air quality, as the average PM2.5 density has dropped to 30 micrograms per cubic meter in 2021 from 46 micrograms per cubic meter in 2015, added Zhai.

China is ready to work with other parties to actively participate in global governance on climate change, said Zhai.
