In Pakistan, former prime minister Imran Khan won a large majority of seats in the recently held by-elections. Khan himself contested seven of the eight seats and won six. The victory shows that people still support him politically and will give fillip to his campaign to force the six month old government into calling a general election. The political development comes as Pakistan grapples with an economic crisis.

Indonesia has banned the sales of all syrup and liquid medication after the deaths of 99 children this year. Indonesia said some syrup medicine was found to contain ingredients linked to acute kidney injuries (AKI), which caused the deaths.
On October 20, Indonesian officials said they had found 200 cases of AKI in children, most were under five.
It comes just weeks after a cough syrup in The Gambia was linked to the deaths of nearly 70 children.

India's largest opposition party, the Indian National Congress, has a new president, one from outside the family of the country's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, for the first time in 24 years. The family is known as the Nehru-Gandhi family.
Mallikarjun Kharge, an 80-year-old former railway minister from the lowest rung of India's caste system, is seen as a loyalist of the Gandhi family, which has produced three Indian prime ministers and is expected to retain its clout over the party. The Congress party held power at the center for more than 50 years.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) said it fired warning shots toward its eastern and western coasts on the night of October 18 to send a "grave warning" to the Republic of Korea (ROK) for firing dozens of artillery shells earlier in the day, state media KCNA reported on October 19. The ROK kicked off its annual Hoguk field training on this week to hone defense capabilities to counter DPRK's nuclear and missile threats. The drills are scheduled to run until October 28.
