Cutting carbon emissions is a global effort that many countries are striving to achieve in the face of climate change. And the same goes for China's state-owned enterprises like Shougang Group. CGTN spoke with the firm's research institute chief technical expert, and got her thoughts on the breakthroughs being made in China.

CENGELJARGAL, Party Delegate, 20th CPC National Congress, Shougang Group "Under China's 'dual carbon' goal, the steel industry has also formulated a carbon emission reduction technology roadmap.

By 2030, Shougang will build a dedicated low-carbon line to reduce carbon dioxide emissions intensity by 30%, and subsequently achieve another 30% reduction by 2035.

Shougang has set up over 30 projects to advance these efforts. They include the charge optimization of blast furnaces, blast furnace hydrogen-rich smelting, using biomass as a blast furnace injectant, high-ratio steel scrap recycling, as well as the capture of carbon dioxide and utilization of blast furnace gases.

We have achieved an over 50% production rate of pellet smelting using large blast furnaces, and we plan to grow that number to 70% or even higher.

The reduction of carbon emissions is one task, while fostering clean production is another. An ultra-low emission transformation focuses on clean production, targeting particulate matter, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. This is best done by China's steel industry, which has a lower control level than foreign countries. The emission of pollutants is the lowest. So, we can use this technology to promote green and clean production in the global steel industry."
