Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday said he hoped U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns would serve as a bridge between the two countries.

Wang made his remarks during a meeting with Burns at which he stressed China-U.S. relations are at a critical juncture.

China and the United States should respect each other, coexist peacefully and forge win-win cooperation, the Chinese foreign minister said as he highlighted the fundamental principle for the two countries to develop their relations.

Neither China nor the U.S. can change the other, Wang noted, adding the U.S. should stop trying to deal with China from a position of strength and stop trying to suppress and contain China's development.

As a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Wang also briefed Burns on the major achievements and significance of the 20th CPC National Congress.

Burns said the U.S. is willing to enhance communication with China, manage the differences and promote cooperation.
