On September 26, 1959, a large oil flow gushed from Song-ji 3 oil well in Daqing, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. This is the first oil well discovered in the Daqing Oilfield. The discovery of the Daqing Oilfield helped China to end its history as an oil-poor country. Within three years, the annual production capacity of crude oil here reached 5 million tonnes. In 1963, China officially announced its oil self-sufficiency.
