John Lee, chief executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), said on Saturday that the HKSAR government will promote schools to continuously review the primary and middle school curricula to include elements such as national history and national geography.

National education is an important part of values education and an important learning objective in schools and it must be rooted in schools, Lee said at the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong Huaxia Education Institute.

In recent years, the HKSAR government has made efforts to promote national awareness and patriotism among young students, and Lee's maiden policy address proposes that the government will promote national education in schools, both inside and outside the classroom, to strengthen students' national identity and national pride, and jointly safeguard the awareness of national security.

Hong Kong Huaxia Education Institute is formed by six educational organizations aiming to promote education and integrate a sense of patriotism into all types and levels of schools to cultivate talents for the new era.
