Lebanon's outgoing President Michel Aoun said on Sunday that he signed the government's resignation decree, a day before his six-year term officially ends.
Earlier on Sunday, the Lebanese presidency confirmed that Aoun had left the presidential palace in Baabda as Lebanese lawmakers failed for four times in a month to elect new president, now leaving the presidency in vacant.
"You are with me and I am with you... Today, one stage ends and another stage begins that requires struggle and a lot of work to get us out of our crises," Aoun told crowds gathered at Baabda Palace to bid him farewell.
According to Reuters, Prime Minister Najib Mikati's government will remains in office in a caretaker capacity for now, citing an unnamed judicial source.
Lebanon is being run by a caretaker government as political divisions have prevented the formation of a new cabinet ever since legislative elections in the spring.
Over the past few years, Lebanon has witnessed several periods of presidential vacuum as a result of divisions among political blocs governing the country.
