Space breeding aims to ease food shortages
02:20

As China nears the completion of its first space station, we turn our attention to a group of low-key passengers: seeds of edible crops. China has been experimenting with space breeding since 1987, involving thousands of varieties of crops. Microgravity and cosmic rays trigger mutations that can lead to new qualities in plants, such as bigger fruits, higher yields and stronger resilience to diseases and extreme temperatures. Scientists say the effort is crucial to safeguarding food security as the world grapples with the impacts of growing populations and climate change.
