World number one Iga Swiatek of Poland opened her season-ending WTA Finals campaign with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over eighth-ranked Russian Daria Kasatkina on Tuesday.
Swiatek, 21, has enjoyed a fruitful season including two Grand Slam singles titles, at the French Open and the U.S. Open.
The three-time Grand Slam champion raced to a 3-0 lead after an early break of serve, and wrapped up the first set in just 37 minutes after securing another break of serve in the eighth game. The second set followed a similar pattern, as Swiatek grabbed an early break to create a 3-0 lead before taking the set.
Title favorite Swiatek failed to qualify for the semifinals in last year's finals in Guadalajara, and Spanish Garbine Muguruza eventually won the title.
The tournament this year is held in Fort Worth, the U.S., featuring two groups of four players each in a round-robin format, with the top two in each group advancing to the semifinals.
