The 14th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Wetlands is scheduled to open on November 5 in both Wuhan, China, and Geneva, Switzerland.
China continues to invest in protecting the wetland ecology and has established 602 wetland nature reserves, more than 1,600 wetland parks and wetland protection areas, with a wetland protection rate of 52.65 percent.
The ecological status of China's degraded wetlands has improved significantly and monitoring of important wetlands has been fully covered, Bao Daming, deputy head of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, said on Thursday.
"China has arranged a total of 16.9 billion yuan of funds to implement more than 3,400 wetland protection projects, restoring over 800,000 hectares of wetlands. At present, the biodiversity is further increased, with 2,258 species of wetland plants and 260 species of wetland birds. The area of 63 internationally important wetlands on the mainland is 3,727,500 hectares. The overall water quality of wetlands has further improved, and artificial water replenishment measures have been implemented in nine wetlands. For example, the replenishment of Dalai Lake wetlands in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region amounts to 1.839 billion cubic meters, and the rate of water diversion has increased to 70 percent," said Bao.
