Antonio Conte, manager of Tottenham Hotspur, fired at the Premier League's decision of resuming the domestic competitions three days after the FIFA World Cup in Qatar ends.

The World Cup will happen from November 20 and December 18, which is the first time in history for the tournament to be in the middle of European football competitions including national leagues and the UEFA Champions League.

According to the schedule, the English Football League (EFL) Cup will begin its fourth round of games on December 21 and 22. Four days later, the Premier League competitions will resume on December 26.

"To speak now about this topic now is not useful because we knew about this situation. I knew it was crazy to put the World Cup during the league, the Champions League, during the season, this type of schedule is really, really crazy," Conte said. "Honestly, also it is really strange that in England we start to play three days after the final of the World Cup."

Conte has good reasons to be angry because other leagues will give their clubs a longer time to rest. Ligue 1 of France, Primeira Liga of Portugal, La Liga of Spain and Serie A of Italy will restart on December 27, 28, 31, 2022, and January 4, 2023, respectively.

"We are the only country to do it. If you see Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, they are taking time to give rest and to breathe a bit. Instead, I find it crazy on Dec. 21 – three days after the final of the World Cup, you are going to play a game in the Carabao Cup. I find this also crazy. Then after three days you play in the Premier League," Conte added. "But now, we are talking about words. The show must go on. This is the truth."

Things were more complicated in the Premier League where 14 games in September were postponed because of the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Top clubs like Manchester United have more games to play in the UEFA Champions (Europa) League in addition to the Premier League, the EFL Cup and FA Cup. These clubs may not have enough midweeks to reschedule the missed games.

According to ESPN, the 2022-23 Premier League season can't be extended. After the FA Cup final on June 3, 2023 and the Champions League final on June 10, 2023, the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship qualifying tournament will continue.
