2022 marks the fifth year since the opening of the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway. And thanks to its whistling, reliable trains, the lives of millions of Kenyans have been changed. Single-working mother Faith Methu is one such woman who found her life transformed for the better. Separated from her alcoholic husband, Faith had to raise her daughter alone. Looking for a better salary, she decided to leave her daughter in her hometown Mombasa and relocate to the capital, Nairobi. But the 500-kilometer distance generated logistical and emotional challenges for Faith and her 6-year-old daughter. But the opening of the railway in 2017 changed everything. Now, the long, difficult commute has become much safer and more punctual, allowing the mother to gain strength and hope after each journey home.
