The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) said on Monday that its recent missile launches were simulated strikes on South Korea and the U.S. as the two countries held a "dangerous war drill," while the Republic of Korea (ROK) said it had recovered parts of a DPRK missile near its coast.

The DPRK carried out a series of military operations, including test-firing a ballistic missile, from November 2 to 5 as South Korea and the U.S. held a six-day air drill involving some 240 military aircraft and two U.S. B-1B strategic bombers.

The DPRK vows to counter provocative military moves "thoroughly and mercilessly," the General Staff of the Korean People's Army said in a report carried by KCNA.

"The large-scale combined air drill is, in fact, an open provocation aimed at intentionally escalating the tension in the region and a dangerous war drill of very high aggressive nature directly targeting the DPRK," the report said.

An official at South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Monday that a South Korean ship had recovered debris believed to be part of a DPRK short-range ballistic missile. It was the first time a DPRK ballistic missile had landed near South Korean waters.

A South Korean Navy rescue vessel used an underwater probe to recover the parts, which are being analyzed, the official said.

Senior diplomats from the U.S., Japan and South Korea spoke by phone on Sunday and condemned the recent tests, including the "reckless" launch of a missile that landed off South Korea's coast last week, according to a U.S. State Department statement.
