The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday condemned Japan's accession to a NATO cyber defense group, requiring it to learn from historical lessons and stop doing things that undermine regional peace and stability.
On November 4, Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada told journalists that Japan officially joined the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE).
In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said "What Japan should do is to seriously learn the lessons of its history, adhere to the path of peaceful development, and stop doing things that undermine mutual trust among the regional countries and damage regional peace and stability."
He made the comments at a regular press conference held in Beijing on Monday.
Zhao noted that NATO has been strengthening its ties with the Asia-Pacific countries in recent years, stressing "there is no need to establish an Asia-Pacific version of NATO" as the region doesn't belong to the North Atlantic.
He also called for international community, especially countries in the Asia-Pacific region, to keep high vigilance on the issue.
The CCDCOE was established in 2008 on the initiative of Estonia with a mission to support its members and NATO in the field of cyber defense research, training and exercises covering the areas of technology, strategy, operations and law.
It has 25 NATO members and nine non-NATO states as contributing participants, of which Japan is the latest one.
