In 1999, the China Western Development Project was proposed to fuel the growth of less-developed central and western China and promote coordinated development among regions. After over 20 years of development, the GDP of western regions increased from 1.5 trillion yuan in 1999 to 20.5 trillion yuan in 2019, accounting for 20.7 percent of the national total, 3.6 percentage points higher.
