The launch of Shenzhou-5 in October 2003 was a significant milestone in China's space exploration. The country's manned space program successfully launched taikonaut Yang Liwei aboard the spacecraft, making China the third country to achieve human spaceflight capability after the former Soviet Union and the United States.
