China's optimized COVID-19 measures not a sign of inaction: Foreign Ministry

China's decision on Friday to adjust its COVID-19 control and prevention protocols is in no way equivalent to sitting the pandemic out, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a press conference.

Zhao made the remarks after the National Health Commission (NHC) issued a 20-point notice on its "optimized" COVID-19 measures that included reducing the time of quarantine for travelers and abandoning the circuit breaker mechanism for inbound flights.

The introduction of these measures is intended to make China's COVID-19 approach more precise and scientific, Zhao said, adding that in no way does it mean the country is relaxing its fight against the pandemic or even "lying flat."

The COVID-19 situation remains tough, with the pandemic still prevailing across the world and outbreaks within China consistently emerging, he added.

China last week has seen cases surge to levels unseen in months, though the nationwide tally is tiny compared to the rest of the world.

The southern megacity of Guangzhou, one of the hardest-hit, has been grappling with the worst local outbreak since the pandemic began, with over 2,000 positive cases reported daily in the past few days.

Zhao called for support and understanding for the NHC's adjustments, which he said are based on science and necessary.

He believes the measures regarding inbound flights and travel will help improve the business environment in China.
