It is the move by some in the U.S. to contain China with the Taiwan question, hampering peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

The remarks were made by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian at a regular press conference in Beijing, in response to U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan's claim of the U.S.'s commitment to the so-called "Taiwan Relations Act."

There is but one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, Zhao said.

The root cause of the tensions in the Taiwan Straits is that the Taiwan authorities have been soliciting U.S. support to seek "Taiwan independence", and that some people in the U.S. intend to contain China with the Taiwan question, he said, stressing it is moves like this that are undermining the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.

He noted the so-called "Taiwan Relations Act" unilaterally concocted by the U.S. side runs counter to the principles of the three China-U.S. joint communiques and basic norms governing international relations, which China has been firmly against from the very beginning. 

Zhao said the U.S. has no right to put its domestic law above international law, still less use it to interfere in China's internal affairs. When it comes to the Taiwan question, he added, the U.S. should abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, not the so-called "Taiwan Relations Act."

He urged the U.S. to stop official interactions and military ties with Taiwan, stop arms sales to Taiwan and take concrete actions, follow through on the commitment of not supporting "Taiwan independence" with real actions, and avoid dragging China-U.S. relations into a dangerous situation.
