India and the United States on Saturday upgraded their diplomatic relationships with ASEAN to Comprehensive Strategic Partnerships, the highest-tier partnership the bloc has with external partners.
U.S. President Joe Biden hailed the launch of a new U.S.-ASEAN pact as a critical step toward tackling "the biggest issues of our time."
"We establish the ASEAN-U.S. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to reflect the ambitious outcomes of the 9th ASEAN-U.S. Summit and the 2022 ASEAN-U.S. Special Summit and to open new areas of cooperation vital to the future prosperity and security of our combined one billion people, and task our officials to follow up on its implementation," according to a statement from the White House.
ASEAN and India also enhanced their ties to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership at the 19th ASEAN-India Summit, according to a joint statement on the two sides on Saturday.
