Azheke is a small village comprising just 60 or so households that lies on China's remote southwestern border. Extreme poverty had forced half of the able-bodied villagers to leave to find work elsewhere. Then a team of experts from Sun Yat-sen University proposed the "Azheke Plan", aimed at achieving sustainable development by promoting local tourism. A young villager named Ma Youde was encouraged to come back home after his graduation to help run a B&B business.
