Batik is created by drawing dots and lines with an instrument called canting, which comprises a copper wax container, a short spout and a bamboo handle. The wax resists dyes and allows the artisan to color selectively by soaking the cloth in one color, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating the process until the desired pattern is formed.

On October 2, 2009, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially inscribed the Indonesian batik on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Various batik patterns and elements, such as Chinese dragons, phoenixes and ancient copper coins, reflect the profound impact of Chinese culture on the art.

Cultural interaction between China and Indonesia dates back to ancient times. According to a local legend, "During the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the fleet of legendary Chinese navigator Zheng He brought Chinese silk and also taught them to print and dye textiles."

Batik is an important symbol of Indonesian culture, and batik shirts and skirts are presented as symbolic presents to foreign guests at major international events in Indonesia.
