In 2015, Tu Youyou was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine along with William C. Campbell and Satoshi Omura. She is the first Chinese citizen to win a Nobel Prize in science. Tu Youyou was awarded "for her discoveries concerning a novel therapy against Malaria." After studies of ancient Chinese traditional medical texts, she discovered and managed to extract artemisinin, which inhibits the malaria parasite.
