Chinese President Xi Jinping held a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday in Bali, Indonesia, during which the two leaders expressed hope to deepen bilateral cooperation to tackle global challenges.

During the meeting, Xi hailed the long history of friendship between Italy and China.

The two sides should inherit and carry forward the tradition of friendship, understand and support each other's core interests and major concerns, seek common grounds while reserving differences, and set an example for the development of relations between countries with different social systems and cultural backgrounds, Xi said.

China is willing to continue to strengthen communication and coordination with the Italian side on multilateral platforms such as the G20, deepen solidarity and cooperation, promote true multilateralism, and join hands to deal with major challenges such as the global economy, Xi further added.

He also expressed hope that Italy can play an important role in the EU's commitment to pursuing an independent and positive China policy.

China adheres to high-level opening up and is willing to import more Italian products with high quality, Xi said.

For her part, Meloni also vowed to continue to promote bilateral exchange and cooperation in fields including trade and culture.

Italy is willing to have close cooperation with China under the framework of the UN and G20 to effectively deal with urgent challenges faced by the world, Meloni said.
