China and Brunei on Friday agreed to enhance bilateral relations when Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam in Bangkok, Thailand on the sidelines of the 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting.

China and Brunei are close neighbors across the sea, friends who trust each other and partners who share development, Xi said, adding that the two countries have set a good example for countries of different sizes to coexist harmoniously and achieve win-win outcomes.

Noting that next year marks the fifth anniversary of China-Brunei strategic cooperative partnership, the Chinese president called on both sides to work together to strengthen ties for the greater benefits of the two peoples.

He also said the two countries should boost cooperation in various fields such as infrastructure, agriculture and fisheries, energy, green development and digital economy, and jointly build the Belt and Road.

China is ready to work with Brunei, a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and others to actively promote maritime cooperation and consultation on a Code of Conduct (COC) to build the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation, said Xi.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah said his country is committed to the one-China policy and is ready to work with China to take bilateral relations to a new level.

He said Brunei welcomes China's active participation in Brunei's economic diversification process, and will strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China in trade and economy, education, sports and defense and promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Brunei is willing to play an active role in promoting ASEAN-China comprehensive strategic partnership, he said.
