Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said the appointment of a special counsel to oversee investigations into him was a "rigged deal."
"This horrendous abuse of power is the latest in a long series of witch hunts that started a long time ago," Trump told supporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, according to Reuters.
Earlier on Friday, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland named Jack Smith, a war crimes prosecutor, to serve as special counsel to oversee Justice Department investigations related to Trump, including the former president's handling of sensitive documents and efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
"The Department of Justice has long recognized that in certain extraordinary cases, it is in the public's interest to appoint a special prosecutor to independently manage an investigation and prosecution," Garland said.
Garland's announcement came three days after Trump announced that he would run for president again in 2024.
