In their World Cup debut, at the first edition of the tournament in either the Middle East or winter, Qatar became the first host team to lose the opening game.

If the defeat was not disappointing enough, Qatar failed to enter Ecuador's box in the first half and had no shots on goal for the whole game. It took the team about an hour to finally snap out of it and begin to move like professional players.

By contrast, Ecuador gained an advantage in the race for knockout qualification with an easy 2-0 win.

Their mature and calm mindset, skillful switching between offense and defense, as well as their solid control of the pace, all sent a message to Senegal, who will play the Netherlands on Monday, that the battle for a top-two place in the group has begun.
