M7.0 earthquake strikes Solomon Islands capital

Most of the power in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, has been cut off following an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale. Authorities in the South Pacific nation say preliminary assessments of damage to power lines are ongoing. The quake struck near the area of Malango at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. There were no immediate reports of casualties, but damage to commercial buildings and private properties is said to be widespread.
