The European Space Agency (ESA) will receive 16.9 billion euros ($17.56 billion) from its 22 member-nations, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher told reporters on Wednesday.

"Almost 17 billion euro will go to the European Space Agency today, and of that 17 billion, France will contribute 3.2 billion," French finance minister Bruno Le Maire added.

According to the 2022 budget published by the agency, ESA received 7.15 billion euros ($7.42 billion), 64.3 percent of which came from its members.

ESA is widely seen as the European equivalent to U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) or China National Space Administration (CNSA).

The agency is currently implementing many projects like the dark matter-detecting Euclid mission and the Juice mission that explores Jupiter's icy moons. Both projects are expected to launch in 2023.

The ESA is also working with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on the Smile mission, which studies Earth's magnetic environment and the Sun-Earth connection. The mission is scheduled to launch either in late 2024 or early 2025.

Other notable missions that involve ESA include the Solar Orbiter launched in 2020 and the James Webb Space Telescope launched in 2021.
