The NFL Thanksgiving Day game between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Thursday, averaged 42 million viewers on Fox, which set a new regular season record, according to Fox Sports.

The previous viewership high of 41.55 million average was for the Giants and San Francisco 49ers on December 3, 1990, on ABC, according to ESPN. Records on this front began to count in 1988.

The Cowboys beat the Giants 28-20 at home. Quarterback (QB) Dak Prescott, in his sixth game for the team, completed 21 of his 30 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns (TDs), but with two interceptions. Both plays were connected with tight end Dalton Schultz. Running back Ezekiel Elliott and tight end Peyton Hendershot both contributed one rushing TD as well.

The Giants' QB Daniel Jones threw 21-for-35 for 228 yards and one TD. He was sacked three times which cost the team 18 yards. Running back Saquon Barkley rushed to score one TD too, but it took him 11 carries to produce 39 yards. Other than that, the Giants didn't work efficiently in offense.

There were three games on Thanksgiving Day and the two other two were Buffalo Bills 28-25 Detroit Pistons and New England Patriots 26-33 Minnesota Vikings (away teams come first). The three games averaged a viewership of 33.5 million, which also set a new record from 32.9 million in 1993. Back then, only two games were aired on the day.

The Bills-Lions game averaged 31.6 million viewers on CBS, higher than any other first game on Thanksgiving Day. The two sides' QBs, Josh Allen and Jared Goff, matched each other in passing performance when Allen threw one interception, But Allen also scored a rushing TD while Goff didn't. Allen's 37-yard pass to wide receiver Stefon Diggs at 0:23 in the fourth quarter also led to a field goal in good distance for kicker Tyler Bass to make the game-winning shot.

The Vikings hosted the Patriots in the last game on Thursday. Running back Kene Nwangwu returned a kick to score a TD for the Vikings.
